The three levers that matter
- Shrink first: pixel count drops quadratically, the single biggest win
- Then cut colors: stickers and simple art look fine even at 32 colors
- Thin frames last: dropped frames hand their duration to the next kept frame, so speed never changes
How to use
Upload a GIF and it is compressed right away with the default settings, so you can compare look and size side by side. Everything happens in your browser - the animation is never uploaded.
- Size: scale by percentage or longest edge. Stickers usually look fine at 240-320px, and pixel count falls quadratically, making this the fastest win.
- Frame thinning: keep every 2nd, 3rd or 4th frame. Skipped frames pass their duration to the kept frame, so total length and playback speed stay the same.
- Colors: GIF tops out at 256. Cartoons and stickers barely change at 32 colors, and turning dithering off shrinks the file further.
- Merge duplicate frames: plenty of GIFs repeat identical frames back to back, wasting bytes. Merging keeps one frame and adds up the duration - fewer frames, identical look.
- Palette: one shared table gives the smallest file, a per-frame table keeps gradients accurate but is bigger. Pick per-frame for heavy gradients.
